"ALICE'S DREAM"

"Alice's Dream" is a Christmas digital collage/painting inspired by references to seasonal art from the past. The primary inspiration came from 3 watercolors created by my mother Alice McElhiney when she was a young art student in the 1920s. When I recently came across her scrapbook containing many unfinished sketches and works-in-progress, I became excited about the idea of still being able to creatively collaborate with her after her death, and to bring a new life to these watercolors of hers that otherwise could easily have been either destroyed or hidden away in storage. So, the idea of this new painting is both a tribute to Alice's memory and a spiritual partnership with her in gratitude for being the beneficiary of one of her creative efforts.....bringing me into the world on Christmas day in 1939. Trying to capture the memory of her imagination and intense love of art, the fantasy room in which I have placed Alice's watercolors contains elements from,

"The Nativity" by Geertgen tot Sint Jans (15th century)
"The Mother Beside a Cradle" by Pieter de Hooche (17th century)
"Bouquet of Anemones" by Odilon Redon (ca. 1910)

3 watercolors by Alice McElhiney (ca. 1920)
