L.A. Jazz Scene Reflects on JOINED AT THE HIP
In 1996 keyboardist Bob James and tenor-saxophonist Kirk Whalum joined forces to record Joined At The Hip for the Warner Bros. label. James and Whalum had crossed paths on numerous occasions during the previous 12 years and, despite James’ seniority, they were co-leaders on this popular set. Both James and Whalum were (and still are) stars of what was called “contemporary jazz,” pop/jazz that puts the emphasis on long melody statements and soulful solos. CONTINUE READING...
