Marshall Cultural Council announced Friday, May 10, that Marshall High School senior and accomplished clarinetist Kirby Brayman is the recipient of the first Bob James Music Scholarship, according to a news release from the organization.
Marshall native Bob James made a donation to MCC after the 2012 Bob James Jazz Festival to enable to the organization to establish the scholarship fund, which is intended to provide support to a Marshall student who has shown a devotion to music.
MHS music teachers recommended Brayman for the honor.
Bob James Jazz Festival planning committee member Norma Jeane Ferguson presented Brayman with a certificate Friday at the MHS Achievement Night ceremonies. Bob James will present her scholarship check during the festival jazz concert Saturday, May 18.
Brayman is the daughter of Roger and Beverly Brayman of Marshall.
She plays clarinet and has been a four-year member of marching and symphonic band under the direction of Kate Farris.
Brayman was selected drum major for the 2012 marching season and was recipient of an Outstanding Band Member Award three times.
She sings with MHS Choraliers and performs with the MHS Orchestra.
She has been a member of Marshall Municipal Band since 2009 and Marshall Philharmonic Orchestra since 2010.
She has also participated in Missouri All-State Honor Band, District Honor Band, District and State Solo and Small Ensemble Contests, North Central Missouri Bandmasters Honor Band, UMKC Honors Wind Symposium, Truman State University Honor Band, Missouri Valley College Concert Band, UCM Honors Wind Symposium, Marshall High School Orchestra and Choraliers, Marshall Philharmonic Orchestra and Marshall Municipal Band.
She is also a three-season athlete and a member of the National Honor Society.
She has been on the “A” honor roll all four years of her high school career and has been active as a peer mentor and in numerous clubs and activities.
Brayman plans to attend the University of Central Missouri and major in biology with a minor in music.
