Bob James offers “Director’s Commentary” of “Nautilus” on Let the Record Show
The legendary jazz musician listens to classic hip-hop records from Run DMC, Slick Rick, Rakim, Nas, Ghostface Killah, and more that sampled “Nautilus”.
LAS VEGAS, NV – Let the Record Show, the crate-dug, vinyl-based interview series returns today with legendary jazz musician Bob James, who offers a deep dive on his seminal and heavily sampled classic “Nautilus” with hosts Mike Pizzo and Warren Peace.
In the first part of the episode, Bob offers the origin story behind the 1974 track, which later would be sampled hundreds – if not thousands – of times for countless golden era rap staples.
The second part of the episode finds Bob listening to the vinyl records of the songs that sampled the track, offering his honest reaction to songs like Run DMC “Beats to the Rhyme”, Ghostface Killah “Daytona 500”, Slick Rick “Children’s Story,” and even the song that gave birth to Nas’ career, Main Source’s “Live at the Barbecue”, among others. Throughout the course of the interview, James educates the audience on how musicians such as himself navigate the tricky world of uncleared samples.
Having just released his new album, Espresso – which includes a sequel to “Nautilus” entitled “Submarine” – Bob also explains how he himself utilized the art of sampling on his new material.
