Today is remembrance day for so many whose lives were touched and enriched by Quincy Jones. I want to add my name to the long list.
The remembrances that stand out for me today must include the 1962 Notre Dame Intercollegiate Jazz Festival when Quincy was a judge, early in his A&R career. My trio prevailed in the competition and as a result I was chosen by him to record my first album ‘Bold Conceptions’ with him in the control room guiding & producing. I benefited further from the badge of approval he gave me with his friend Sarah Vaughan in 1965, leading to an inspiring 4 years as her pianist & arranger.
He remained loyal and in 1969 he asked me to play & arrange on his “Walking In Space” album, giving me an opportunity to meet & audition for Creed Taylor. I can proudly say that the friendship with Quincy has defined my career.
I most vividly remember how every musician that played for him on his recordings always seemed to rise to their highest level of artistry, knowing that he was listening & encouraging them from his favorite place, the control room.
Thank you Quincy!
My condolences to his family and loved ones.
With love & respect from,
